YA Contemporary Fiction

Tyler Falls is a YA contemporary told from both Tyler's and Emma's POV.
Emma Perez's brother, Ethan Giovanni, sits in a mental institution for the murder of Dr. and Mrs. Falls. Deemed mentally incompetent and unfit to stand trial, Ethan has one weekly visitor -- Emma. She doesn't deny his guilt, he's her brother and she loves him spite of the fact he's paranoid schizophrenic.

I'm currently over halfway done with another YA contemporary about an overweight girl with a beautiful singing voice who struggles to get people to hear her for her talents, not see her for her appearance. Tentatively titled: Breaker.
What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Finding the time to do it. I currently work full-time outside the home and have to squeeze in a chapter here and there whenever I can. Then when I get the time to write, I have to try to keep myself from visiting Facebook, Twitter, surfing, answering emails, etc. I tend to be a little ADD or OCD or something. At any given time on my computer you're likely to find three email windows open, my word program, in addition to several Internet windows. I'd probably get a lot more work done if I used a computer to write without Internet access.
Who are your books published with?
My first book, Beauty's Beholder, a YA contemporary, is available as an ebook.
My 2nd book, Between The Moon And Shine is in the process of being published by a small local (
) publishing house, Walrus Publishing. St. Louis
Plotter or Pantser? Why?
A combination of the two. I tend to use the "Snowflake Method" to start with. I start out with a seed of an idea and from that idea, I write a short sentence describing what the book will be about. Then I expand on it a bit more. I do a rough outline, using key bullet points that I want to cover, chapter by chapter. Maybe doing that a few chapters at a time. I know what the book is going to be about. The key points and how it will end, but the people and places along the way surprise me a lot of times.
What books have most influenced your life?
I used to read a lot of books. Then for several years, I got away from reading. I started to see these black-covered books everywhere. People were raving about the Twilight Series. So, I read all four books, back-to-back and they got me interested in reading again. The more I read, the more I decided I wanted to try my hand at writing myself. Funny thing about this, I've heard the same thing from other readers and writers, as well.
If you were to write a series of novels, what would it be about?
I absolutely adored the "Summer" series by Jenny Han and Ann Brashares' "Traveling Pants" series. I love YA contemporary, and I love a little magical realism too. A combination of those two books would be great fun to write.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
I read. I write. I run. And I love to snuggle and carry on one sided conversations with my Miniature Pinscher named Barkley.
